Massage and Alcohol: Why They Don't Mix

After a long day, the idea of a relaxing massage and a glass of wine might sound tempting. But combining alcohol and massage can actually do more harm than good.

Why Avoid Alcohol Before a Massage:

  • Alcohol is a diuretic: it dehydrates the body, making muscles more prone to cramping.
  • It impairs the nervous system, which affects how your body responds to pressure.
  • You may not be able to give accurate feedback on pain or discomfort.

Why Avoid Alcohol After a Massage:

Massage improves circulation and activates the lymphatic system, which may intensify the effects of alcohol:
  • Lower tolerance and faster intoxication
  • Increased dizziness or nausea
  • Dehydration and headache

Are There Any Exceptions?

Some light celebratory drink a few hours after a session is usually fine. But ideally, give your body time to recover and rehydrate first.

Better Alternatives Post-Massage:

  • Herbal tea
  • Electrolyte water
  • Light stretching or a relaxing bath
Massage is a detoxifying process. Supporting it with hydration and rest gives the best results.
